Global Brands Group, one of the world’s leading independent, international brand management, retail and licensing companies, last week announced that it has signed up Seardel Investment Corporation to create official licensed clothing bearing the 2010 FIFA World Cup trademark. This deal will enable retailers across South Africa to carry a wide range of 2010 merchandise leading up to the highly anticipated football festival.
“The Seardel partnership aligns with Global Brands Group’s ongoing commitment to ensure that the South African clothing industry is supported, and 2010 FIFA World Cup fans are presented with merchandise choices that meet the varied needs of the marketplace,” said Mark Matheny, co-chairman and co-CEO of Global Brands Group.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup Official Licensed Product line, which is expected to become available in SA in late 2007, will include T-shirts, shorts, scarves, jackets, sleepwear and underwear.

Global Brands Group’s partnership with Seardel, which will extend through October 2010, should also provide a significant boost to local manufacturing businesses. As the largest textile and clothing manufacturer in South Africa, Seardel employs 15 000 people and expects to create additional jobs as the licensing program grows leading up to the FIFA World Cup in 2010.

Aaron Searll, CEO of Seardel said “We are delighted to be a part of what is expected to be SA’s biggest licensed property for the next few years. Our partnership with Global Brands Group in this important category gives Seardel the opportunity to play its part in arguably the world’s greatest sporting event: It’s a prospect about which the company is extremely excited. We have the resources and infrastructure and have appointed a dedicated team to oversee the project.”

In 2005, FIFA appointed Global Brands Group as both its worldwide exclusive licensing representative and store operator for FIFA-branded retail destinations from 2007 to 2014. Additionally, Global Brands Group will act as the on-site concessionaire for all FIFA events throughout this eight-year term.

The less experienced someone is in the field of branding, the more likely he or she is to hold a strong opinion on the subject at hand. No more so than when it comes to the topic of brand engagement: the art of building brand equity inside the organisation, where poorly conceived and executed campaigns are the equivalent of corporate kryptonite “ able to reduce the once strong and powerful organisation to the reputational status of an Enron.
Often the most powerful lessons one learns in one™s career is observing lessons in what not to do. Negative reinforcement is far more powerful and suggestive than positive reinforcement. Thus, if one is broadminded enough to scrutinise, document and accept observed failures in one’s organisation than one is not likely to repeat the mistake again.

However, like the Loch Ness monster and Bigfoot sightings of this kind of behavior are rare amongst South African corporations. Who are often victims of “drinking too much of their own coolaid.

Wow, did our weekend start off crazy. When we arrived at the offices on Friday evening to catch up on some work that we were busy with ealier that day, we found our offices vandalised and totally cleaned out of all equipment and samples. This unfortunate incident was totally wiped from my mind by 7.38 am on Saturday morning when my wife gave birth to a beautiful baby girl by c/section (I watched every bloody step). These two shocking events had many after effects like police reports, fingerprints taking, hospital visits, shopping for new computers, getting new software, searching for a new house and on and on and on…………..and all of this in the span of 6 days.

Now I’m sitting here and thinking about what happened. Only one of these things are really important to me, little Jasmin Rose. She is the thrill of the rollercoaster ride. That point of the ride that makes you feel all queezy and excited with a new zest for life (and work)
